Scary Bat Halloween Cupcake Tutorial

I made some fun cupcakes for Halloween this year. I made a Spider, Bat, Pumpkin, Witches hat, Ghost and Werewolf. I thought I’d share how I made the Bat and give you a tutorial.

The parts marked in orange and the things you need to prepare the day before.

Here’s what you will need:

Bat
Chocolate
Fondant
Black sugar
Butter cream
Royal Icing
Bat wing template
Piping bag and small round nozzle

Method

  • First you will need to draw bat wings on paper with a black pen for a template then cover with greaseproof paper.
  • Melt some chocolate in the microwave or over boiling water, take a tea-spoon and gently apply carefully over the template onto the greaseproof paper. I know that sounds hard but if you use the back of the spoon to spread small amounts it will be fine,you can actually use a piping bag with a small round tip to apply the chocolate if you find it easier. These take about half hour to set but the longer the better. When they have set use black royal icing in a piping bag with the smallest round nozzle to go round the edges and back to the middle, this is what makes them look good.
  • Now make up some butter cream frosting and colour it black. Cover your cupcake so it’s slightly more raised in the middle then dip it into a bowl of black sugar making sure it’s all covered.
  • Lastly make up his face with fondant, you can colour this yourself or buy ready coloured fondant. To apply the eyes just dab a paint brush or something similar into water and brush in a circular motion so the fondant sticks.
